1. Camera Positioning & Distance
Taking a passport photo is very different from taking an Instagram selfie. Selfie cameras use wide-angle focal lengths (24mm or wider) which distort facial features, causing nose magnification and ear shrinkage.
Have a family member hold the phone 1.5 to 2 metres (5 to 6.5 feet) away from you. The phone lens should be strictly at eye level (not tilted upwards or downwards).
Do not zoom in too tight in camera. Take a medium shot from chest to 6 inches above head. You can easily crop to the 35×45mm aspect ratio afterwards.
2. Natural Lighting Setup (Eliminating Shadows)
Lighting is the #1 reason home photos get rejected. Harsh ceiling tube lights or camera flash create shadows behind ears, under the nose, and below the chin.
The Daylight Window Method:
1. Find a room with a large window receiving indirect daylight between 9 AM and 4 PM.
2. Stand facing the window so daylight strikes both sides of your face equally.
3. Ensure your back is toward a plain white wall or clean door.
4. Turn off harsh yellow overhead bulbs to prevent mixed color temperatures.
